Cruise Lines Tightening Rules on Smoking

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

One of the reasons many are choosing e-cigarettes over traditional ‘analog’ cigarettes is the increasing restrictions on smoking in public. Restaurants, airplanes, stadiums and many other public venues with large crowds generally have restrictions on where you can light up.

Cruise lines like “Princess’ Cruises” are tightening the screws on smokers as well. Going forward, guest of the cruise line will not be able to smoke in their staterooms or on balconies. Three other cruise lines (Carnival, Holland America and Norwegian) are joining Princess in cracking down on where travelers can light up.

“Our consumer studies show that smokers are a small minority of our passengers, and that the large majority of passengers value having their primary living space on-board smoke-free,” comments Jan Swartz, Executive Vice President of Princess Cruise Lines.

In fact, the numbers of smokers has been on a steady decline for years. Only 19.3% of adults, or 45 million Americans, smoked cigarettes in 2010 according to federal health regulators…in 2005, 20.9% of adults were smokers.

At iCruise.com, a Florida based cruise agency, complaints about smoky cabins and balconies have dropped sharply. Don Walker, co-president of iCruise, says the drop can be attributed to tighter rules on smoking onboard cruise ships. Walker says smokers seem accepting of these restrictions.

How are these policies affecting e-cigarette users?

Depends on the cruise line.

Some are lumping e-cigarette users in with regular smokers and asking them to only use their devices in designated areas while others clearly distinguish between the two and allow e-cigarettes in staterooms and around the ship.

On Princess, guests are allowed to use their e-cigarette in their staterooms since they leave no odor and have no known second-hand effects. However, their use is restricted in dining halls and theaters.  Carnival on the other hand is restricting e-cigarettes to designated smoking areas since they’re relatively new and not much is ‘officially’ known about them.

Tightening restrictions on smoking in public areas is serving as an impetus for smokers to either quit or seek alternatives like e-cigarettes.

While there are still many misconceptions out there, it’s not fair for digital e-cigarettes to be lumped in with traditional ‘analog’ smokers. Next time you’re taking a cruise or traveling, be aware of any of these restrictions and mindful of others around you.

Electronic Billboard Promoting E-Cigarettes Lights up Times Square

Friday, August 19th, 2011

In another sign of the gaining prominence of electronic cigarettes, the vaping devices recently lit up the nighttime with a paid promotion on CBS’ SuperScreen in New York’s Times Square.

The short ad seen in the video below was paid for by the National Vapers Club, a voluntary education organization consisting largely of vapers…the short ad was sponsored to help educate the public on the availability and benefits of e-cigarettes.

NVC’s message intention was to convey to smokers that alternatives are available.

“Our message is simple: Now smokers have a choice,” says NVC member Nathan Dunn.

“Without access to e-cigarettes, many of our members may return to smoking tobacco cigarettes. Some surveys show that over 80% of e-cigarette users felt that if the product was unavailable they might go back to smoking tobacco,” says Spike Babaian, president of the National Vapers Club.

“Many of our members quit smoking tobacco because their doctors told them their health depended on it,” says Spike.

Many of NVC’s members are former smokers.

While much back and forth has gone on over regulation of these devices, the FDA recently decided it would not appeal a federal court ruling ordering the agency to classify the devices as tobacco products rather than ‘drug delivery devices’….regulating e-cigs like this would have severely curtailed their availability.

In the original ruling, Judge Leon opines “… FDA cites no evidence that those electronic cigarettes have endangered anyone. Nor has FDA cited any evidence that electronic cigarettes are any more an immediate threat to public health and safety than traditional cigarettes, which are readily available to the public.”

But some states and localities have placed rather draconian restrictions on the use of these devices that emit vapor similar in composition to a fog machine.

Many of our customers are smokers looking for an alternative. While quitting is the best option for your health, e-cigarettes may present a good alternative that’s not so damaging.

State E-Cigarette Legislation/Local Bans – Update

Monday, April 25th, 2011

Spring is moving forward with the hints of may flowers and spring showers engulfing much of the U.S. Now that Easter is in the rear-view mirror, it’s time to take stock of any e-cigarette legislative proposals circulating in state houses around the nation.

From Sacramento to Albany and Spokane to Richmond, various state capitals are considering some measures to either regulate or outright restrict electronic cigarettes and e-smoking.

As we said in our last update, some of the regulatory proposals are sensible. Arizona and Colorado have passed measures stipulating e-cigarettes are only legally available to committed tobacco users over the age of 18.

Other more sweeping proposals in California and New York have suggested bans on the sale of electronic cigarettes but none have become law or appear to be close this legislative year. Some state lawmakers who introduced these types of bills last year are either no longer in office or not pursuing the issue – at this time anyway.

Some localities though have placed restrictions on electronic cigarettes. King County, Washington banned e-smoking in public places and the city of Spokane has placed restrictions on advertising.

College campuses and hospitals around the country have also passed smoking/tobacco bans on campus. Some of these ordinances do include e-cigarettes.

Way down south, Savannah, Georgia has banned smoking in public places…this ban and many others like it unfortunately include e-cigarettes, unfairly in our opinion of course.

Full bans though only seem to be occurring in isolated municipalities and campuses around the U.S.

If you’ve been enjoying the art of e-smoking and grown accustomed to inhaling nicotine infused liquid that’s heated into a vapor, take a moment and see what’s happening in your state or hometown.

If any legislators are proposing draconian restrictions in your area, we urge you to contact your elected representatives and relevant committee members today and urge them to not restrict the rights of consenting adults to enjoy a less expensive alternative to regular cigarettes.

Unfortunately, electronic cigarettes and e-smoking come with a lot of misconceptions. Through education and patience, we hope state lawmakers and even the federal regulatory authorities will come to see electronic cigarettes for what they are – alternatives to traditional cigarettes.

Club Commissions Study to Learn Effects of Electronic Cigarettes On Indoor Air Quality

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

One of our industry’s consumer groups – the National Vapers Club – has commissioned a study to determine the effects electronic cigarette use has on indoor air quality.

As you may or may not know, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration along with the World Health Organization has been using its power to potentially ban electronic cigarettes in the United States. They have strict guidelines on how they’re supposed to be marketed, etc. For example, we are not allowed to claim electronic cigarettes help you quit smoking.

Currently, the FDA and related agencies are evaluating the health and safety of e-cigarettes. Those of us in the industry think our products should be considered tobacco products and regulated as such.

However, the FDA may classify them as a drug which would for all intents and purposes, ban electronic cigarettes in the United States. (…see about a court ruling blocking this move for now)

ExperimentsTo better understand e-cigarettes and to “clear the air,” the National Vapers Club is commissioning a study to understand the affects e-cigarettes use has on indoor air quality. They contracted with a firm experienced in studying indoor air quality as well as specific affects related to smoking.

The study will consist of two parts – data collection and analysis/publication.

NVC is hopeful results from this study will help alleviate people’s concerns about the health and indoor environmental impact of electronic cigarettes.  Results from this study and future ones will help the industry, consumers and government agencies better understand exposure risks and other health concerns of e-cigarettes.

Read more about some myths surrounding e-cigs in our electronic cigarette knowledge center today. And if you have any questions about e-cigarettes, please don’t hesitate to ask.

In regards to the study, the data collection phase is complete. Researchers are currently compiling their findings and will release a final report soon. When they do, we’ll let you know and provide a quick summary.

Where do Electronic Cigarettes come from?

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Especially if you’re new to smokeless electronic cigarettes, you may be wondering where they come from, who invented them and so forth. They’ve only been around for a few years and not even that long in the U.S. market.

While some e-cigarette liquids and components are made in the U.S, the concept itself comes from China – which is where many of these devices are still manufactured.

Hon Lik – a 52-year old pharmacists and inventor – created the first electronic cigarette after losing his father to lung cancer about 10 years ago. Obtaining his first patent in 2003, Lik was a heavy smoker just like his father.

E-Cig Inventor Hon Lik

He’d light up first thing in the morning, catch a smoke between lectures, during lunch and in the lab at the university where he studied Oriental medicine. By the end of the workday, he usually had burned through two packs – and sometimes he’d go through a third over dinner and drinks with friends.

What’s interesting about Hon’s invention is how he found his inspiration in the addiction itself.

“It’s a much cleaner, safer way to inhale nicotine,” says Hon.

Obtaining his patent in 2003 and introducing the electronic cigarette in China the next year, Hon’s invention has been all the rage in China. His company – Golden Dragon Holdings – changed its name to Ruyan to better market its products around the world.

(Ruyan literally means “to resemble smoking”)

Getting Started with Electronic Cigarettes

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Whether you’ve heard of e-cigarettes or not, you’ve certainly heard about the dangers of smoking traditional cigarettes. E-cigarettes can offer the same look and feel of traditional smoking but with much fewer harmful substances.

Many people are using smokeless electronic cigarettes to satisfy their cravings for nicotine. They’re much less intrusive than regular cigarettes or smokeless products like chew and snuff. While electronic cigarettes do contain a very addictive substance (nicotine), they DO NOT contain many of the carcinogens regular cigarettes do.

But many wonder how they can start using electronic cigarettes. Where can I buy them? What’s a good brand? How much does it cost?

You may have seen smokeless electronic cigarettes for sale in your local gas station or at a truck stop and many dealers around the Internet.

The Sidesho E-cigarette from Modern Vapor though provides an economical and dependable way to enjoy an alternative way to enjoy smoking. For as little as $29.95, you can get what you need to get started or get fully outfitted to enjoy smoking at home or on-the-go for only $119.95.

Once you purchase the Sidesho starter kit or one of our other smokeless electronic cigarette brands, you will be able to enjoy smoking anywhere. And once you run out of the nicotine e-juice, just refill your e-cig cartridge and continue vaping!

After the initial expense of the starter kit, you’re sure to see that vaping is a much less expensive habit to maintain than traditional smoking.

National Vapers Club Members Claim Electronic Cigarettes Help them Quit Smoking

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Technically, we’re not supposed to say electric cigarettes like our Sidesho E-cig can help you quit smoking. The law currently doesn’t allow us to as we can only say they’re an alternative to traditional cigarettes.

But a nationwide organization for vapers produced a quick video of many of its members who claim smokeless electronic cigarettes did indeed help them kick their smoking habits…rather than smoke a cigarette – which kills over 400,000 people every year – they vape!

Most if not all of the National Vapers Club’s members claim to have smoked at least 10 years but a few smoked 35-40 years. Smoking is one of the hardest habits to kick – as difficult as heroin some say. Many people try and fail several times before successfully giving cigarettes up for good.

Many people who try smokeless electronic cigarettes find they can still deliver nicotine and feeling of smoking without most if not all of the harmful side effects.

Traditional smoking gives off an unmistakable odor that affects your social life and maybe even your professional life too.

Vaping on the other hand is odor free or if there is any odor, it’s like cotton candy or some other pleasant smell.

If someone says they are able to give up cigarette smoking by switching to electric cigarettes then we say more power to them.

And after watching the short film, check out the National Vapers Club and find other vapers out there who can serve as a great support group and social outlet. Also find out about legislative and regulatory issues regarding electric cigarettes and more.

Eliminating Nasty Tobacco Odor with Smokeless Electronic Cigarettes

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

One of the undoubtable trademarks of cigarettes is the smell, it gets everywhere – in your hair, car, clothes – anywhere or anything the smoke comes in contact with. And the smell’s not affecting you so much since you hardly notice it, but your non-smoking friends and family certainly notice it.

There’s no mistaking the ominous odor cigarette smoke has…and with increased awareness of the health effects of smoking, people may even try and avoid you intentionally.

Smokeless electronic cigarettes resolve this problem and allow you to enjoy smoking without the pungent smell that comes along with it.

How?

E-cigarettes emit a vapor, not smoke, which is why we call it vaping. This vapor literally evaporates before your eyes. Since cigarettes burn tar and other chemicals in addition to tobacco, the smell from the smoke attaches itself to about anything it can find.

E-cigarettes on the other hand heats a nicotine infused liquid that you inhale.  Since this vapor doesn’t contain the properties regular cigarettes do, it doesn’t give off that unmistakable smell. Once your family and friends notice this, they won’t be so strict on where you smoke. Many e-cigarette users who switched from regular cigarettes say their spouse and loved ones don’t mind they smoke, or “vape,” in the car going down the road or in the house.

Take a look at Modern Vapor’s newest article – Eliminating Nasty Tobacco Odor with Smokeless Electronic Cigarettes – to learn more about how e-cigarettes do not have the nasty odors so many others find repulsive about regular cigarettes.

And if you’re ready to start eliminating those pungent odors from your life without having to give up smoking entirely, check out Modern Vapor’s selection of smokeless electronic cigarette starter kits today.

What are Smokeless Electronic Cigarettes?

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

What are these interesting contraptions that look like real cigarettes that I’m seeing more and more of?

You’re probably witnessing someone enjoy a revolutionary way of smoking. A smokeless electronic cigarette is a device that heats nicotine infused liquid, known as electronic cigarette juice, which vaporizes and delivers the nicotine to the smoker.

Smokeless electronic cigarettes provide an innovative way to enjoy smoking without the pitfalls of traditional cigarettes. They DO NOT contain many of the harmful substances found in traditional smokes – tar, carbon monoxide, fire, tobacco AND THE SMELL to name a few.

Another benefit of smokeless electronic cigarettes – you can smoke them just about anywhere!

Since they only emit water vapor, smokeless electronic cigarettes do not have the smell regular cigarettes do. No more offensive odors, no more smelly clothing, hair, etc.

There are several parts to a smokeless electronic cigarette but once you put it together, you can easily satisfy your nicotine cravings without the harmful effects of traditional cigarettes.

A battery connected to an atomizer heats the nicotine infused electronic cigarette juice that you inhale. You’re not inhaling smoke, you’re inhaling a nicotine infused vapor……which is why we call it “vaping” rather than smoking.
