Automatic vs. Manual E-Cigarette Batteries

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

If you’ve been browsing around at e-cigarettes, you’ve likely stumbled across a couple of different types of batteries – manual and automatic.

If you’re new to vaping, you may be scratching your head wondering what these terms mean. Either type can fit the same model but there are distinct differences between the two.

See below for a quick description of each type of battery.

Automatic Batteries

These e-cigarette batteries are automatic since the heating element is engaged when a pressure-sensitive switch inside the unit responds to air being drawn through. Once engaged, a heater coil is turned on, which vaporizes the nicotine e-liquid.

Pros

Great for beginners, especially if they’re traditional cigarette smokers looking to e-cigarettes as an alternative since automatic batteries work like a traditional cigarette – just puff and inhale. Also, battery consumption is more controlled, which helps maximize time between charges.

Cons

Automatic battery models are more vulnerable to damage due to leaking liquid. Since these models require an air channel through them, sooner or later, the unit will die out or get damaged. Automatic batteries also have restrictions on the length of the drag or number of drags per minute. While this helps maximize battery life, it poses some frustration to veteran users who desire more control over their vaping experience.

Manual Batteries

These e-cigarette batteries have a tiny push-button switch on the battery, which is sealed and less susceptible to damage from a leak. The user pushes the button to engage the heater coil, which vaporizes the nicotine e-liquid that’s inhaled.

Pros

Manual batteries give users more control over their vaping experience, allowing longer, more frequent drags. The unit can be pre-heated and left on for as long as you like.

Cons

With the ability to take longer drags more frequently though means the battery will not last as long.

As you can see, the big difference between automatic and manual e-cigarette batteries is the switch function. Is there a push button or do you inhale to activate the heating element?

One thing to remember is that you can switch between the two with many e-cigarette models, including our signature Sidesho model.

In the beginning, many choose to use automatic batteries since it most closely resembles a traditional cigarette. But as a newbie becomes a vaper, they may choose manual batteries so they can have more control over how they enjoy e-cigarettes.

FDA Decides Not to Appeal January Court Ruling – E-Cigarettes to Be Regulated Like Tobacco

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

This past January, we reported on a court ruling giving electronic cigarette makers, sellers and users a win in an ongoing dispute with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The issue at hand dealt with how e-cigarettes should be regulated.

On the one hand, the FDA maintained the devices should be regulated as drugs rather than tobacco products. According to research done by the agency, e-cigarettes contained toxins besides nicotine. Many of these toxins occur naturally in tobacco plants, which is where nicotine is derived from.

Classifying e-cigs as a ‘drug delivery device’ would dramatically curtail its availability many say and perhaps lead to an outright ban.

Many public health experts and independent researchers show e-cigarettes contain around the same level of toxins as popular stop-smoking aids like patches and gums.

Electronic cigarette manufacturers, retailers and users (a.k.a. ‘vapers’), including Modern Vapor, contend e-cigs only require some regulation to prevent their sale to minors. We have, and will always support sensible rules governing the sale and use of starter kits and e-cig accessories available here and elsewhere.

FDA’s Decision Not to Appeal D.C. Court of Appeals Ruling – What Does it Mean?

Basically, it means the FDA will have to regulate e-cigarettes much the same way they do traditional cigarettes. While the agency did not outline a timeline by which these rule changes would take place, this news is certainly very welcoming to many who use and enjoy e-cigarettes.

However, the agency did say that if e-cigs are marketed as a quit-smoking aid, they could regulate those individual devices under the much stricter drug delivery device rules. In its statement, the FDA says if e-cigs are “marketed for therapeutic purposes” (i.e. stop-smoking aid), they can impose much tighter regulation.

Some manufacturers and retailers of e-cigarettes do make the claim their products can help smokers quit.

While we’ve provided a short video on our blog about the topic, Modern Vapor doesn’t make these kinds of claims…and not only for legal reasons.

Keep in mind that states and localities around the U.S. are considering what many would consider draconian regulations.

But in the U.S. as a whole, those over 18 can legally buy e-cigarette starter kits and accessories. We invite you to experience an alternative smoking device that many have already found much enjoyment in. Join the growing numbers of ‘vapers’ out there who have made the switch!

Court Rules to Allow Import of E-Cigarettes

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

In good news for vapers and electronic cigarettes, a 3-judge panel in a D.C. Appeals Court ruled that the Food & Drug Administration can only regulate e-cigarettes as tobacco and not drugs, and thus cannot block their import into the U.S.

The ruling specifically allows e-cigarette maker Sottera, Inc. to now import its NJOY e-cigarettes.

The court stated in its ruling “Electronic cigarettes are battery-powered products that allow users to inhale nicotine vapor without fire, smoke, ash, or carbon monoxide. The liquid nicotine in each e-cigarette is derived from natural tobacco plants.”

This latest ruling basically holds up a prior court ruling this past January.

Congress granted FDA authority in 2009 to regulate, but not ban, tobacco.

In a statement from Soterra, the company says it’s delighted with the ruling and will allow them “…to make progress on its mission to be the most responsible electronic cigarette manufacturer on the market.”

Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids president Matthew Myers on the other hand is urging the government to appeal the court’s ruling.

“This decision will allow any manufacturer to put any level of nicotine in any product and sell it to anybody, including children, with no government regulation or oversight at the present time,” Myers said in a statement.

This past September, the FDA sent warning letters to 5 e-cigarette retailers saying they were illegally marketing e-cigarettes as a stop smoking aid. The agency claims it had the authority to regulate e-cigarettes as drugs.

A California e-cigarette firm settled a civil suit in October by agreeing not to target marketing to minors or claim their products are a safe alternative to cigarettes.

We think the Court of Appeals ruling was correct in allowing the importation of e-cigarettes. Regulating our products as tobacco rather than a drug allows more flexibility in producing and selling e-cigarettes.

We of course require all of our customers to be at least 18 years old and while claims are made to e-cigarettes being a good stop-smoking aid, we do not explicitly endorse our products for this purpose.

However, if you want a modern alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes, consider Modern Vapor’s line of smokeless electronic cigarettes today.

Where do Electronic Cigarettes come from?

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Especially if you’re new to smokeless electronic cigarettes, you may be wondering where they come from, who invented them and so forth. They’ve only been around for a few years and not even that long in the U.S. market.

While some e-cigarette liquids and components are made in the U.S, the concept itself comes from China – which is where many of these devices are still manufactured.

Hon Lik – a 52-year old pharmacists and inventor – created the first electronic cigarette after losing his father to lung cancer about 10 years ago. Obtaining his first patent in 2003, Lik was a heavy smoker just like his father.

E-Cig Inventor Hon Lik

He’d light up first thing in the morning, catch a smoke between lectures, during lunch and in the lab at the university where he studied Oriental medicine. By the end of the workday, he usually had burned through two packs – and sometimes he’d go through a third over dinner and drinks with friends.

What’s interesting about Hon’s invention is how he found his inspiration in the addiction itself.

“It’s a much cleaner, safer way to inhale nicotine,” says Hon.

Obtaining his patent in 2003 and introducing the electronic cigarette in China the next year, Hon’s invention has been all the rage in China. His company – Golden Dragon Holdings – changed its name to Ruyan to better market its products around the world.

(Ruyan literally means “to resemble smoking”)

Prominent Doctor Criticizes FDA Position on Electronic Cigarettes

Monday, October 25th, 2010

As you very well may know, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been strongly critical of the safety of smokeless electronic cigarettes. Some states have even entertained the idea of banning them outright.

In a press conference last year, the FDA claimed these alternative nicotine delivery devices contained harmful “toxins” and “carcinogens” and since there hasn’t been extensive testing as of yet, smokers were urged to stay away from electronic cigarettes.

Dr. Elizabeth Whelan, president of the American Council on Science and Health, was strongly critical of the FDA’s stance in this op-ed piece that appeared in the Washington Times…she claims the agency’s statements were misleading and incomplete and that in her opinion, the FDA has abandoned their long tradition of sticking to sound science when making judgments about particular items.

Whelan says the agency was being truthful about the fact that electronic cigarettes haven’t been through all of the formal FDA safety tests. However, they failed to point out that traditional cigarettes are not harmful because of the various carcinogens and toxins they contain but because a smoker inhales so much smoke with a cigarette.

Otherwise known as “products of combustion,” this inhaled smoke is what causes many of the diseases (i.e. cancer, cardiovascular disease, emphysema and more) that kill an estimated 450,000 people each year.

Electronic cigarettes on the other hand mimic traditional cigarettes in their look and feel but deliver nicotine differently

The FDA also says electronic cigarettes are nicotine delivery devices – that much is true but it’s not the nicotine that kills so many people, it’s the smoke according to Dr. Whelan. Getting the nicotine without the harmful smoke would yield an extraordinary public health benefit Whelan says.

Other nicotine delivery systems like gums and patches have been approved by the FDA but since smoking cessation rates are less than 15% with these products, Dr. Whelan claims they’re an abysmal failure.

Finally, Dr. Whelan claims the FDA was urging e-cigarette ‘vapers’ to call-in and report any adverse effects since they couldn’t find any evidence on their own. Whelan believes the agency intends on banning these devices in the U.S.

In the end, Whelan contends that any alternative to regular cigarettes should be taken seriously since smoking still remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the U.S.  She says that rather than condemning the devices, they should be commissioning studies to determine the true safety of these devices.

Many people are using smokeless electronic cigarettes to satisfy their cravings for nicotine. They’re much less intrusive than regular cigarettes or smokeless products like chew and snuff. Eliminating Nasty Tobacco Odor with Smokeless Electronic Cigarettes

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

One of the undoubtable trademarks of cigarettes is the smell, it gets everywhere – in your hair, car, clothes – anywhere or anything the smoke comes in contact with. And the smell’s not affecting you so much since you hardly notice it, but your non-smoking friends and family certainly notice it.

There’s no mistaking the ominous odor cigarette smoke has…and with increased awareness of the health effects of smoking, people may even try and avoid you intentionally.

Smokeless electronic cigarettes resolve this problem and allow you to enjoy smoking without the pungent smell that comes along with it.

How?

E-cigarettes emit a vapor, not smoke, which is why we call it vaping. This vapor literally evaporates before your eyes. Since cigarettes burn tar and other chemicals in addition to tobacco, the smell from the smoke attaches itself to about anything it can find.

E-cigarettes on the other hand heats a nicotine infused liquid that you inhale.  Since this vapor doesn’t contain the properties regular cigarettes do, it doesn’t give off that unmistakable smell. Once your family and friends notice this, they won’t be so strict on where you smoke. Many e-cigarette users who switched from regular cigarettes say their spouse and loved ones don’t mind they smoke, or “vape,” in the car going down the road or in the house.

Take a look at Modern Vapor’s newest article – Eliminating Nasty Tobacco Odor with Smokeless Electronic Cigarettes – to learn more about how e-cigarettes do not have the nasty odors so many others find repulsive about regular cigarettes.

And if you’re ready to start eliminating those pungent odors from your life without having to give up smoking entirely, check out Modern Vapor’s selection of smokeless electronic cigarette starter kits today.

Life Expectancy of a Rechargeable E-Cigarette Battery

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

How do e-cigarettes get the energy to deliver nicotine to my body and how long do they last?

Smokeless electronic cigarettes contain a lithium-ion battery that powers an atomizer that heats nicotine infused liquid that you inhale. Every so often, you need to re-charge this battery to be able to fully enjoy e-cigarettes.

Lithium-ion batteries are found in many electronic devices including cell phones, laptop computers and other small electronic devices.

How long the battery lasts depends a lot on the conditions you use the e-cigarette, how much you use it and the quality of the battery. The frequency in which you use your smokeless electronic cigarette determines how often you need to re-charge it. As a rule of thumb, it’s good to re-charge the battery while you’re sleeping at night.

It typically takes 1 ½ to 2 hours to fully recharge a lithium-ion battery for your e-cigarette. Most batteries can be charged around 200 to 300 times before they are worn out so on average, you should go through about 2 to 3 batteries per year.

Modern Vapor e-cigarette batteries cost around $16 plus shipping.

We include two battery options – automatic and manual.

Automatic e-cigarette batteries begin running and stay on as soon as you press the button on the cartridge. They don’t last as long as manual batteries since they stay running as long as you have the device turned on. Manual e-cigarette batteries on the other hand only come on when you take a drag on your e-cigarette.

In the end, lithium-ion batteries on smokeless electronic cigarettes represent the most cost effective, technologically advanced form of portable power device. As technology develops, expect longer lasting batteries to become more affordable and available.

In the mean time, check out Modern Vapor’s selection of smokeless electronic cigarettes. Our products contain the best batteries available so you can be sure you will get the most out of your e-cigarette between charges.
